With the end of school year looming, Year 12 students will be getting ready to celebrate schoolies. It can be a wonderful time for them, away from home and enjoying with friends. However, this can make parents anxious because they may be concerned about the safety of their teenagers.
To ensure your teenager has a safe and enjoyable schoolies, it is useful to have open conversations in the lead up to any trips or parties. It is important that teenagers are informed about the effects of alcohol and other drugs, and are aware of the law around drug-related issues such as underage drinking and possession of drugs. It is useful to explore strategies that teenagers can use to turn down alcohol and drugs in a party situation. It can help them to know that the majority of teenagers their age DO NOT use illegal drugs, and more and more young people are choosing not to drink alcohol. It is helpful for teenagers to have emergency numbers handy, and maintain regular communication with their parents.
